The PetSafe Smart Feed is the best automatic feeder for a cat that eats dry food. It holds 24 cups, serves up to 12 meals a day, and has a Slow Feed setting for cats that bolt their food. For other households, the PETLIBRO Granary Dual Bowl suits two cats, the PETLIBRO Granary Smart Camera Feeder lets you watch meals, the refrigerated PetSafe FreshFeed handles wet or fresh food, and the Cat Mate C500 works without Wi-Fi or a power outlet.
Automatic feeders handle the schedule, not the hunt. A cat-care brochure from the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) , based on an AAFP consensus statement, says automatic feeders “can also be helpful although they do not typically provide for hunting or foraging.”
This is desk research, not a hands-on test. Capacities, food limits and power details come from each maker’s own pages and instructions.

How We Chose
Each pick needed a maker page or manual stating the food it handles, its capacity, its controls and its power source. We then chose feeders for five situations: a single cat on dry food, two cats, an owner who wants video, a cat on wet or fresh food, and a home where Wi-Fi isn’t wanted or reliable.
We left out microchip feeders. They do a different job: VCA Animal Hospitals says they open only for a registered pet and stop pets from stealing each other’s food. We compare them in our microchip pet feeders for multi-pet homes guide.
1. PetSafe Smart Feed: Best for Big Hoppers and Fast Eaters
Why it stands out
The Smart Feed is built for capacity and pacing. PetSafe’s product page lists 24 cups of dry or semi-moist food and up to 12 meals a day, from 1/8 cup to 4 cups each. Its Slow Feed setting dispenses meals larger than 1/8 cup in small amounts over 15 minutes. PetSafe says the conveyor design helps prevent food jams. Sensors send an alert to your phone when food runs low or empty, and the app works with Alexa.
It comes with a stainless steel bowl and holder, and PetSafe says the lid, hopper, bowl and holder are dishwasher safe.
The catch
It needs a 2.4 GHz (802.11b/g/n) Wi-Fi network. It runs on an AC adaptor, and the battery backup takes four D-cell alkaline batteries that aren’t included. It’s also big: PetSafe lists it at 20.3 x 9.4 x 12.6 inches. For more than one pet, PetSafe sells a separate Meal Splitter .
Best for
A cat on dry food who eats too fast, and owners who want to refill less often.
2. PETLIBRO Granary Smart Feeder Dual Bowl: Best for Two Cats
Why it stands out
The Granary Dual Bowl (Search Amazon for PETLIBRO Granary Smart Feeder Dual Bowl ) feeds two stainless steel bowls from one 5-liter hopper. PETLIBRO’s product page explains how its meal splitter works: set it to divide meals equally, or move it so more food goes to the right bowl. You can schedule 1 to 10 meals a day of 1 to 50 portions each, and PETLIBRO says each portion is about 20 ml (10 g), roughly 1/12 cup.
It connects on either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and the app sends alerts for low food, malfunctions, low battery and food blockages.
The catch
It takes dry food only, with kibble 2 to 15 mm across. Both bowls fill from the same hopper, so both cats eat the same food, and nothing stops a faster cat from eating from both bowls. The FelineVMA brochure also advises giving each cat its own bowl in a separate location, so side-by-side bowls suit cats that already eat calmly together. Backup power is three alkaline D batteries, not included.
Best for
Two cats that get along and eat the same dry food.
3. PETLIBRO Granary Smart Camera Feeder: Best With a Camera
Why it stands out
This version of the Granary adds a camera (Search Amazon for PETLIBRO Granary Smart Camera Feeder ). PETLIBRO’s product page lists a 1080p camera with night vision and a downward-facing 145° wide-angle lens. It also has two-way audio, motion and sound alerts, and the same 5-liter hopper.
PETLIBRO’s plan comparison shows live video without a subscription. Without a paid Video Cloud plan, recordings go to a microSD card, which isn’t included. A dual-bowl version is also sold.
The catch
It’s dry food only, with kibble 2 to 15 mm across. PETLIBRO says it suits small or medium-sized pets. On battery power (alkaline D batteries, not included), PETLIBRO says meals continue on schedule but Wi-Fi and the camera turn off. Cloud storage needs a separate subscription for each feeder.
Best for
Owners who want to see that the cat actually ate.
4. PetSafe FreshFeed Refrigerated Pet Feeder: Best for Wet or Fresh Food
Why it stands out
The FreshFeed is a refrigerated feeder. PetSafe’s product page says dual semiconductor cooling keeps wet or fresh food at 40°F when used as directed. A rotating tray holds up to six meals, and each compartment holds up to 5 fl oz. PetSafe says it pauses cooling five minutes before a meal is served and doesn’t chill during mealtime.
You schedule meals in the PetSafe Pet Companion app, and PetSafe says no subscription is required. The stainless steel tray inserts are removable and dishwasher safe, a dual-locking lid helps keep pets out, and the legs adjust for height. The linked listing is the white version.
The catch
Six small meals is a short run, and PetSafe says it suits cats and small dogs. The box includes a power adaptor and cord, and the page doesn’t mention a battery backup. PetSafe also markets it for raw diets. The FDA says its Center for Veterinary Medicine’s study of raw pet food “identified a potential health risk for the pets eating the raw food, and for the owners handling the product.”
Best for
Cats that eat wet food, and owners who prep fresh meals ahead.
5. Cat Mate C500: Best Without Wi-Fi or an Outlet
Why it stands out
The Cat Mate C500 (Search Amazon for Cat Mate C500 ) runs on three AA batteries, with no app or outlet needed. Closer Pets’ instructions say good-quality alkaline batteries should last about 12 months, depending on use. You set up to four meal times a day on its digital timer. Closer Pets’ product page says each of the five compartments holds up to 11.5 ounces, and twin ice packs under a close-fitting lid help keep wet, dry or mixed meals fresh.
The lid and bowl are dishwasher safe, and the Closer Pets version comes with five stainless steel bowl inserts. You can also fasten it to a wooden board so it doesn’t tip.
The catch
It covers short gaps, not long trips. At one meal a day it lasts up to four days, or two days at two meals a day. There are no phone alerts. The instructions say to use the ice packs unless the room is below 5°C (40°F), and to freeze them for at least six hours first. In very warm weather, they advise against leaving wet food out for long periods and say you may prefer to serve dry food.
Best for
Weekend absences or a fixed weekday mealtime, in a home without reliable Wi-Fi.
How to Choose
Start with the food. VCA notes that “most automatic feeders are designed for use with kibble.” For wet food, the FDA says to promptly refrigerate or throw out unused or leftover canned and pouched pet food, which is why the FreshFeed’s cooling and the C500’s ice packs matter. For kibble, check the size: PETLIBRO lists 2 to 15 mm, and PetSafe’s Smart Feed page doesn’t give a limit. Our wet vs dry cat food comparison covers which format fits your routine.
Plan the meals. Ask your veterinarian how many meals a day, and how much food in total, suit your cat. The C500 allows up to four timed meals a day, while the Smart Feed and the Granary Dual Bowl allow up to 12 and 10.
Check the portions. Hopper feeders dispense in set steps: PETLIBRO says each Granary portion is about 20 ml (10 g), and the Smart Feed serves meals from 1/8 cup to 4 cups. Tray feeders like the FreshFeed and the C500 serve the portions you put in each compartment.
Plan for outages. VCA warns that drained batteries can cause missed meals. Compare the backup power column above, and check your router: the Smart Feed needs 2.4 GHz.
More than one cat? FelineVMA notes that some programmable bowls use microchips so only one cat can open them.
Stay involved. VCA says automatic feeders may startle sensitive pets and are “no substitute for human interaction.” Closer Pets suggests testing the feeder with your cat while you’re home, and says cats shouldn’t be left alone for long periods without someone checking in. A feeder also doesn’t give a cat the chance to hunt, so pair it with play; our interactive cat toys guide includes a foraging feeder. FAQ
Can automatic cat feeders handle wet food?
Most can’t. VCA notes that most automatic feeders are designed for kibble, and PETLIBRO’s Granary feeders take dry food only. The PetSafe FreshFeed refrigerates wet or fresh meals, and the Cat Mate C500 uses ice packs for wet or dry food.
What happens to an automatic feeder in a power outage?
It depends on the backup. The Smart Feed and the PETLIBRO Granary feeders take D batteries, not included; PETLIBRO’s camera feeder keeps serving meals on battery but turns off Wi-Fi and the camera. The Cat Mate C500 runs on AA batteries. PetSafe’s FreshFeed page doesn’t mention a battery backup.
