For most aggressive chewers, the KONG Extreme is the best first buy. It is made of natural rubber, KONG sells it in five sizes matched to dog weight, and the hollow center takes kibble or treats, so chewing has a goal. If your dog has already destroyed rubber toys, the Goughnuts Large Ring is the next step up. Its green ring hides a red layer that shows when it’s time to take the toy away, and Goughnuts will replace a ring your dog chews through.

No chew toy is indestructible. KONG says so directly , and West Paw prints the same warning on its Hurley page. Every toy below is a supervised chew. This is desk research, not a hands-on test: specs, durability language and safety warnings all come from each maker’s own pages.

How We Chose

Each pick needed maker sizing for the exact toy, a material the maker describes for tough or power chewers, a published wear or damage cue, and a job the other picks don’t do. KONG’s own advice applies to all four: supervise your dog with any new toy until you’ve seen that it plays with it safely.

Plush, rope and food-puzzle toys were left out. KONG lists the Wobbler, along with several of its other toys, as toys that should not be chewed, which is why our KONG Wobbler review treats the Wobbler as a feeder (Search Amazon for KONG Wobbler ).

1. KONG Extreme: Best Overall for Most Power Chewers

Why it stands out

The KONG Extreme (Amazon search) is KONG’s black natural-rubber toy. KONG’s product page says this formula is “specifically designed for power chewers” and describes it as “the most durable strength of KONG rubber.” The toy is made in the USA from 100% natural rubber.

The sizing is the most useful part. KONG lists five sizes by dog weight:

KONG Extreme size Dog weight (KONG)
Small Up to 20 lb
Medium 15 to 35 lb
Large 30 to 65 lb
X-Large 60 to 90 lb
XX-Large 85+ lb

KONG adds that “Power Chewers may need to size up one or two sizes.” For a dog that chews hard, start at the top of the weight range or one size above it.

The hollow center gives the Extreme a second job. KONG suggests stuffing it with kibble and a dash of peanut butter, or freezing it, for a longer challenge.

The catch

KONG’s warning reads “Supervised use only” and “Discontinue use if damaged.” Even KONG’s toughest rubber is a supervised toy, so watch the first sessions.

Best for

Most power chewers, especially dogs that settle better with food to work for. If your dog has already torn chunks out of KONG rubber, go straight to the Goughnuts ring.

2. Goughnuts Large Ring: Best for Dogs That Destroy Rubber Toys

Why it stands out

Goughnuts builds its colored rings with a red “safety indicator” inside. If the dog chews through the outer layer and the red shows, Goughnuts says that’s the sign to take the toy away. Under its safety guarantee , Goughnuts will replace a toy your dog chews through or damages. You return the damaged toy, and Goughnuts’ home page says you are only responsible for the shipping fees.

The Large Ring (Amazon search) is listed for dogs 60 to 100 lb. It measures a 2.19-inch cross section and a 6.25-inch diameter. For dogs 30 to 70 lb, Goughnuts sells a Medium Ring (Search Amazon for Goughnuts Medium Ring ) with a 1.75-inch cross section and a 5-inch diameter. The toys are 100% natural rubber, molded in Modesto, California.

Goughnuts’ guarantee page says bigger dogs need bigger cross sections to help eliminate the “scissor like chunks” it calls the primary reason for intestinal blockage. That is the maker’s claim, and a reason to size up rather than down.

The catch

Only the colored rings have the red indicator; the Heavy Duty Black ring is solid, with no indicator, though Goughnuts says it is still guaranteed. Goughnuts also says only its rings are for supervised power chewing. Its sticks, balls and tugs are interactive play toys, so buy the ring for a power chewer.

Best for

Large dogs that have already shredded standard rubber toys, and owners who want a visible signal for when to take a toy away. A ring has no food cavity, so it does nothing for a dog that needs a food task.

3. West Paw Zogoflex Hurley: Best for Chewing, Fetch and Water Play

Why it stands out

The Hurley (Amazon search) is a bone-shaped toy made from West Paw’s Zogoflex material. West Paw’s product page says it is “designed for super chewers,” works for “intense fetch, tug, and chewing sessions,” and floats in water.

West Paw says the Hurley contains no latex, silicone, BPA or phthalates, and is made in Bozeman, Montana. It comes in three lengths: Extra Small at 4.5 inches, Small at 6 inches and Large at 8.25 inches. When it wears out, West Paw takes Zogoflex toys back through its Join the Loop recycling program, and it backs the toy with its “Love it Guarantee.”

The catch

West Paw’s own safety note says, “No dog toy is indestructible.” It tells owners to choose the right shape and size, supervise use, and stop using the toy as soon as it is damaged. The Hurley has no food cavity, and its sizes are listed by length, not dog weight. Compare the length with your dog’s mouth before you buy.

Best for

Dogs that mix chewing with fetch or swimming. A dog that grinds on one toy for long sessions is better served by the KONG Extreme or a Goughnuts ring.

4. Benebone Wishbone: Best Flavored Nylon Chew

Why it stands out

The Benebone Wishbone is a nylon chew made with real bacon. Benebone’s product page says its curved shape is “easy to grip and hold,” with deep grooves on each prong for flavor. That shape suits dogs that pin a chew between their paws and work at one end. Benebone makes its nylon chews in the USA. Sizes run from Tiny to Giant, matched to breed examples from Chihuahua and Yorkie (Tiny) up to Great Dane and Mastiff (Giant). The linked listing is the Medium bacon version, which Benebone pairs with breeds like Australian Shepherds and Doodles.

Benebone’s replacement guide says its chews naturally wear down over time, and it sets a schedule: most last a few weeks to a month, depending on the dog’s chewing style, and Benebone recommends replacing or recycling one after about a month, or sooner with significant wear.

The catch

This is a tough nylon chew, and it only stays a good pick if you replace it on Benebone’s schedule. If your dog has dental problems, ask your veterinarian whether a hard chew suits it before you buy.

Best for

Dogs that respond to flavor and chew in steady, gnawing sessions, in a home that will actually replace the chew on schedule.

How to Choose a Chew Toy for a Power Chewer

Go big, then bigger. KONG says power chewers may need to size up one or two sizes on the Extreme, Goughnuts says bigger dogs need bigger ring cross sections, and West Paw tells owners to choose toys of the appropriate shape and size for their dog.

Size for the biggest dog in the house. Toys get shared in multi-dog homes, and KONG and Goughnuts size these toys by dog weight. A toy sized for a 30-pound dog is undersized once an 80-pound dog picks it up.

Match the material to the chewing. Rubber (KONG, Goughnuts) is what both makers use for their power-chewer toys. Zogoflex (Hurley) is the choice when chewing is mixed with fetch and water. Nylon (Benebone) is the flavored option, and it comes with a replacement schedule.

Watch, and retire on evidence. KONG says to supervise your dog with any new toy until you’ve seen that it plays with it safely. Goughnuts says to take its ring away when the red layer shows, KONG and West Paw both say to stop using a damaged toy, and Benebone recommends replacing its chews after about a month, or sooner with significant wear.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

A dog that needs mental work at mealtime may do better with a food dispenser such as the KONG Wobbler , which KONG says should not be chewed. If the problem is a dog chewing its bed, see our dog beds for heavy chewers . If your dog has dental disease or has swallowed toy pieces before, ask your veterinarian before buying any chew toy.

FAQ

Is any dog toy indestructible?

No. KONG states that no safe dog toy is completely indestructible, and West Paw’s Hurley page says no dog toy is indestructible. Treat durability as slower wear, not a promise.

What size chew toy should a power chewer get?

Start with the maker’s weight range, then size up if the maker says to. KONG says power chewers may need to size up one or two sizes on the Extreme, and Goughnuts says bigger dogs need bigger ring cross sections.

How often should a nylon chew be replaced?

Benebone says most of its chews last a few weeks to a month, depending on the dog’s chewing style, and recommends replacing or recycling one after about a month, or sooner if it shows significant wear. If your dog has dental problems, ask your veterinarian whether a hard chew suits it.
