A kitten’s suitability depends on the exact litter box and its documented automatic-use limit. Do not use one brand’s weight threshold as permission for another model. Some instructions specify weight; others specify age and require the unit to remain unplugged below that age.
Three examples with different boundaries
| Named model | Manufacturer’s automatic-use boundary | Below the boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot 4 | At least 3 lb | Follow the LR4 manual’s powered-off, supervised procedure |
| Litter-Robot 3 | Current Whisker FAQ says at least 5 lb | Use the exact model’s instructions; LR4’s lower threshold does not apply |
| PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Smart PAL00-16807 | At least six months old | Manufacturer says leave unplugged and scoop manually |

These are documented limits, not results from our own pet or sensor testing. Reaching a threshold does not establish every aspect of suitability or guarantee sensor performance.
Check every cat that can enter
The LR4 manual makes the whole household relevant: every cat with access must meet its automatic-use requirement. The weight of the largest cat cannot compensate for a smaller kitten sharing the same room.
Record the exact model, the current instruction, the smallest cat that can reach the box and the mode you intend to use. Keep age and weight in separate fields. An app-generated weight entry is not an independent confirmation of an underweight kitten’s suitability.
Automatic, manual and off are different states
Read the below-minimum procedure in full. A manual-cycle button is not a universal substitute for automatic mode, and the word supervised does not mean leaving an unsuitable unit powered on and watching occasionally.
For the specified PetSafe model, the instruction below six months is to leave it unplugged and scoop waste. For LR4, use the manual’s exact powered-off and supervised approach. Do not transfer either process to a different box because it has a similar shape.
If the model, minimum or permitted operation remains unclear, a conventional tray keeps the unresolved equipment question separate from the kitten’s need for a usable litter area. Do not defeat sensors or alter safety settings to make a kitten appear eligible.
Resolve conflicting instructions with the manufacturer
Product generations can have different instructions. If the current manual and a general FAQ disagree, preserve the model and document details and ask the manufacturer which applies. Do not average thresholds or select whichever answer permits earlier automatic use.
This comparison deliberately stays with the three documented examples above. It does not provide an all-brand safety list or assume that a later Litter-Robot generation shares LR4’s requirement.
The Litter-Robot model guide addresses the wider generation choice. Keep each model’s current kitten-use instruction separate from a general feature comparison.
Research method
We reconciled manufacturer FAQs and the named LR4 manual on October 11, 2026. No litter box or kitten was handled or tested. The original asset is the age/weight/mode matrix and household record, which keep model-specific restrictions visible. General odor-control or convenience rankings cannot replace those instructions.
